Here's my lesson plan to accompany my Glogster sample from last post!
Glogster Poetry Lesson Plan
(7th Grade Language Arts)
Purpose: Help students “identify main ideas and/or emotions in a wide range of poetry” (Utah Curriculum Standard 1 Objective 3.f) and “write to identify and reflect on feelings to recreate experiences” (Utah Curriculum Standard 2 Obejective 2).
Introduction: This project is divided into three parts to allow students to explore poetry written by others, write their own poetry, and then create a poster that displays their own work as well as pieces they enjoyed within the unit. Then, the students will present their work and write a short essay explaining why the theme of their essay appealed to them and reflect on the process as a whole.
Part 1: We will read a few set poems which I will designate, but the students will then be free to access the library and the internet to collect their favorite poems. They must select a minimum of 4 poems and create a reference page with a citation for each poem and a brief synopsis of their poem.
Part 2: We will then study various forms of poetry, including haiku, ode, and blank verse, as well as some basic literary concepts, including personification, metaphor, simile, etc. The students will experiment and write their own poems (minimum of 2).
Part 3: The students will create a Glogster poster that includes their selected poems, their original poetry, and a brief statement that explains the theme of their poster. The poster should be unified by a common theme and be neat and accurate.
Final Presentation: Students must prepare a 3 minute presentation of their poster, explaining the theme, identifying each item, and sharing at least part of one of their original poems.
Final Paper: Students will write a 2-3 page paper explaining their poster, identifying the literary and poetic devices employed in their original works, and reflecting on the emotional and creative experience of reading others’ poetry and writing their own.
